While most homes in New Salem had only a couple of rooms on one floor and were occupied by large families (some houses had a sleeping loft for the children), Mr. Hill's small family lived in the town's only two-story house.
The wool carding mill, which was operated by two oxen treading on a large, inclined wooden wheel, was another of Mr. Hill's enterprises.
