The six years that Lincoln lived in New Salem comprise
most of the town's brief history, but those years
provided an important turning point in his life.

In 1837 he moved from New Salem to
Springfield to begin his law practice.

On the base of the statue:

"With malice toward none; with charity for all"

(from Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address - 1865)
