In 1911, a group of Danish-Americans from the midwest traveled to the Santa Ynez Valley, about 45 miles from Santa Barbara, and there they founded the town of Solvang, which means "Sunny Valley".  Their heritage is reflected in the architecture of the shops and restaurants that line the streets of the town, and also in the windmills that are reminiscent of the Danish countryside.
