These scenic miles of the Wisconsin River are divided (by
a dam in the town of Wisconsin Dells) into the Upper Dells and the Lower Dells. In the
section of the Upper Dells known as The Narrows, the river is only 50 feet wide
and is flanked on both sides by sandstone walls. It's here that the river is said to flow on
its side, because it is more than twice as deep as it is wide.
